Dried flowers, so pretty and immortal

Enjoying a beautiful bouquet, admiring pretty flowers without the risk of seeing them wither away? It's possible with our delicate dried flower creations. Trendy, wildly retro, these small immortal bouquets have been making a poetic comeback in our homes for a few years now. Here's a look at this trend that's on the rise!

They do not need any care, can easily be stored for decades and are durable. Dried flowers are currently enjoying a boom, especially in specialist flower shops. In the 1980s, people began to shun these pretty immortals, which had become obsolete after the craze of the 1960s and 1970s. Long confined to the role of a "hippie hobby", dried flowers have now become a must-have for floral and interior decoration. Thanks to the general craze for vintage and boho, this new and much sought-after floral trend now has cult status: weddings, wall decorations, garlands, jewellery, custom-made aerial pieces, fashionistas and artists everywhere are deliberately staging them.

New methods

Today, almost everything is dried. Not only flowers, but also a multitude of herbs, grasses, grains and leaves. Among the most common varieties are lagurus, that lovely rabbit-tailed grass, setaria, phalaris, sweet lavender, pampas, hydrangea, gypsophila, wheat, thistle, solidago, ruscus and eucalyptus. In the past, romantics used to press violets, four-leaf clovers or forget-me-nots between the pages of a book and ended up with pale, flattened flowers.

Nowadays, drying plants has become a professional process and new methods now make it possible to preserve their original shape and colour. However, dried flowers are still sensitive to UV rays, which dull their colours after long-term exposure. The drying time varies depending on the humidity, temperature, ventilation, etc. The drying time for plants should not exceed 5 days. There are three phases in the drying of a plant. Firstly, the warming up of the plant, i.e. the time during which the plant will adjust its temperature to reach the ambient temperature inside the dryer. Secondly, rapid evaporation, which is the phase during which all the available water contained in the plant will evaporate. Finally, slow evaporation, which is the longest phase of the process, during which the little available water in the plant evaporates. The drying process is completed when the temperature at the entrance to the dryer is equal to the temperature at the exit of the dryer. The aim is to obtain plants and flowers that are completely free of moisture (moisture automatically causes mould and the probable degradation of the plant).

The flowers are dried in the following way: Here are the team's tips if you want to start drying your favourite flowers.

● Harvest your flowers in good weather, dry if possible.

● Cut the plants early in the morning, when the sap is rising, but after the dew has dried on the petals and leaves

● Use clean, sharp secateurs to avoid damaging the stems

● Remove the lower leaves and any damaged petals or leaves

● The longer the varieties are exposed to the sun, the more they bleach. Use sunlight to get the tones you want

● To maintain the colour of the plants, dry in a dark, warm room, upside down

Good for the planet

Dried flowers have a reduced impact on the planet! Indeed, they do not require any water to survive or any particular maintenance. Opting for the delivery of a dried bouquet also means saving water, transport and energy! It is more ecological and economical to decorate your home with a bouquet of dried flowers that will last for several years than to change them every week with fresh flowers that quickly perish. As for maintenance, simply keep your bouquet away from direct light so that it retains its colours, and away from humidity. Take care to dust it from time to time with a feather duster or - preferably with a cold hair dryer. All these tips will help you to keep your bouquet as long as possible!

Shapes and colours

When it comes to dried flowers, there is something for everyone! They come in all shapes and almost all colours. Dried flower bouquets will fit perfectly into your interior decoration. In living rooms as well as in bedrooms, these pretty compositions, which require little maintenance, can bring a natural and vegetal touch. Today, they come in all colours: from sunny yellow to blue, from pale pink to fluorescent pink, from natural plants to ultra-dyed. As many bouquets are possible as are unimaginable.

Decorative trends have also brought flowers in the form of herbariums to the fore. Slipped into glass frames, they are delicately hung on the wall. Under a glass cover, dried flowers are also displayed as if in a glass case. They are well protected from dust and bring a chic and natural look to your home.

Wreaths are perfect for weddings, christenings and other celebrations. They will enhance your outfit with originality and create a country atmosphere. They can also be found as bridal bouquets or boutonnieres. As part of a sustainable approach, the use of dried flowers is increasingly popular with the couples we meet, who often tell us of their wish to be able to keep this exceptional piece of equipment, the bridal bouquet, like their ancestors, generations before them!

As far as the wedding is concerned, if at the time we were close to blasphemy by incorporating dried flowers in our bridal bouquets, nowadays everything is allowed! Mixed with the fresh flowers of the bride's bouquet, these pretty imperishables bring lightness and a crazy bohemian touch to any arrangement. More and more brides are succumbing to the "all dried flowers" trend, which makes it possible to create original bouquets.
